You have two ways to get more customers from your website. Pay for more traffic, or waste less of the traffic you already have. The second is dramatically cheaper, and for most small businesses in Surrey, Croydon, Epsom, Guildford, Woking, Reigate, Sutton and across South London it is completely untouched.
The uncomfortable maths
A significant share of mobile visitors abandon a page that takes longer than three seconds. If you are paying for clicks, you are paying for those abandonments at full price. A site that loses a third of its arrivals to slowness is effectively a 33% tax on every marketing pound you spend.
Work it through with your own numbers:
- 1,000 visitors a month, 3% enquiry rate, 50% close rate, £1,500 average job = £22,500 a month
- Cut abandonment so 15% more visitors actually see the page, and you have added thousands of pounds of pipeline without buying a single extra click
Where the seconds actually go
- Enormous unoptimised images. By far the most common culprit. A 4MB photo straight from a phone camera, displayed at 400 pixels wide.
- Plugin and script pile-up. Older builder sites routinely load fifteen or more third-party scripts before showing a word of content.
- Render-blocking fonts. Three font families with six weights each, loaded before anything paints.
- Cheap shared hosting. A slow first response wastes half a second before the browser has anything to work with.
- Chat widgets, pixels and tag managers. Each one is a small tax, and they compound.
What "fast" actually means in 2026
- Largest Contentful Paint under 2.0 seconds on a mid-range Android phone on 4G
- Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1 — nothing jumping about as it loads
- Interaction to Next Paint under 200ms, so taps feel instant
- Modern image formats (WebP or AVIF), correctly sized, lazily loaded below the fold
- JavaScript kept deliberately small, with heavy work deferred
The search bonus
Core Web Vitals are a ranking input, and mobile-first indexing means Google judges the phone experience, not the desktop one. So performance work makes you easier to find and more likely to convert once found. Very little marketing spend does both.
Where to start this week
- Test your homepage in PageSpeed Insights on mobile and write down the LCP figure.
- Compress and correctly size every image above 300KB.
- Remove any plugin, widget or tracking script you cannot name a business reason for.
- Reduce to one or two font weights.
- Re-test and compare.
If the number barely moves, the problem is usually structural — a bloated theme or page builder that cannot be optimised out of. That is the point at which rebuilding costs less than continuing to patch. We hand-build sites for businesses across Surrey, Croydon, Epsom, Guildford, Woking, Reigate, Sutton and across South London with sub-second loads as standard, and we will show you a free demo of your own site rebuilt properly before you commit to anything.
The comparison nobody makes
Ads cost money every month and stop working the moment you stop paying. Social content costs time, permanently. Speed costs money once and then quietly improves the performance of every other channel you use, forever. It is the only marketing spend that gets cheaper the longer you own it.
What speed actually improves at the same time
- Conversion rate, because fewer people leave before the page arrives
- Google Ads efficiency, because you stop paying for clicks that bounce
- Organic rankings, because Core Web Vitals are a real signal
- Bounce rate and engagement time, which feed back into rankings
- Perceived professionalism, which is impossible to buy any other way
The numbers to hit
LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds, CLS under 0.1 — measured on a mid-range phone on mobile data, not your desktop. Use PageSpeed Insights for a diagnosis and Search Console's Core Web Vitals report for what real visitors experienced.
The usual culprits on a small business site
Enormous uncompressed images straight off a camera. Homepage sliders loading every slide before anything is visible. Twenty or thirty plugins each shipping their own scripts. Page-builder markup producing bloated HTML. Three font families loaded from two sources. Chat widgets, pixels and review embeds firing on load. Cheap shared hosting with slow response times.
The fix order that returns the most, fastest
- Compress and resize every image, convert to WebP, lazy-load below the fold.
- Delete plugins you do not truly need.
- Self-host two font weights maximum.
- Defer non-critical scripts; delay chat and tracking until first interaction.
- Replace the slider with one static hero and a clear call to action.
- Reserve dimensions for images and embeds to stop layout shift.
- Move to proper edge hosting with caching and a CDN.
- If it is a heavy page-builder site, cost a hand-coded rebuild against a year of lost enquiries.
The maths that convinces most owners
1,000 mobile visits a month at 2% gives you 20 enquiries. Going from 4.5 seconds to 1.5 commonly lifts that to 2.7%, so 27 enquiries. Seven extra opportunities a month, no extra traffic, no extra ad spend. At a £900 average job and a one-in-four close rate, that is over £1,500 a month from a fix you paid for once.
Speed is not a one-off
It decays. Every new plugin, tracking script, embedded video and uploaded photo adds weight. Check your two most important pages quarterly, and treat any new third-party script as a cost that has to justify itself.
Where to start today
Run your homepage and your best service page through PageSpeed Insights on mobile. If LCP is over three seconds, stop planning new campaigns. Fix the leak first, then pay to fill the bucket.
